Spring 2021 COVID-19 Testing for Returning Residents

Our city and region have seen substantial increases in positive COVID-19 cases over the past several weeks. As a result, San Francisco has returned to the Purple (Widespread) tier and California's Regional Stay at Home Order. We want to thank all of you for your continued diligence, discipline, and commitment to keeping our residential community and our campus safe by adhering to the guidelines of the university and the San Francisco Public Health Department.  As a result, the number of COVID-19 infections at the university remains low.

To ensure the ongoing health of the residential community at SF State, all students living on campus will be required to take a COVID-19 test upon their return to campus from Winter Break and adhere to mandatory 7-10 day quarantine period in their residential room.

Mandatory Free COVID-19 Testing

SF State will partner with a third-party vent to administer free COVID-19 tests for students who live on campus and are returning back from the holiday break. Two tests will be required – the first upon the your return to the campus and the second test at the end of a 7 to 10 day quarantine.

Quarantine/Restricted Activities

Residents will be asked to quarantine for 7 to 10 days upon return to university housing immediately after the first test is administered. University officials will notify students when they are able to leave their rooms.

Planning ahead and preparing in advance is key in ensure a comfortable and safe experience. We realize that this will present challenges with outside jobs, visiting family, or running errands for those 7 to 10 days, so please plan ahead with your employers and people in your lives prior to your return to campus.

Here are some questions to ask yourself as you prepare for this new directive:

  • How have I communicated to my family my need to minimize exposure to COVID while I visit/travel and the need to quarantine on campus when I return?
  • How do I plan on ensuring I do not engage in high-risk activities during the winter break?

Additional details, scheduling protocols, and instructions will be forthcoming after the Winter Break. Please continue to monitor your email and housing communications. We wish you a safe and well-deserved break this holiday season!
