Wait List Information

While we do not anticipate having a wait list after classes begin in January, we highly recommend completing everything by November 15 for the best chances of receiving a space early. Students who apply after November 15 may experience a delay in receiving a space.

  • Students are placed on the wait list based on completion of the Initial Payment, License Agreement, and Application, in that order
  • Students who complete the Initial Payment after the wait list begins will be added to the next update after their payment has been recorded
  • Wait list movement is based on spaces becoming available, which depends on students moving out at the end of the Fall semester and during Winter Break
  • The wait list will be updated until February 28
  • The wait list is sent on Tuesday and Friday, in the afternoon

The Steps to Housing

    Step 1: Application

    Step 2: License Agreement

    Step 3: Confirmation

    Step 4: Assignment

Step 1: Application

SF State Housing is limited and in high demand. SF State housing is not required and not guaranteed. Spaces are assigned on a first-come, first served basis. The Housing Office highly recommends applicants to SF State University also submit their housing application as soon as possible, even before being admitted to the University. Students are encouraged to apply for housing as soon as possible beginning September 6, 2016 to increase their chances of obtaining a space and avoid being on a waiting list for Spring 2017.

Spring housing availability depends on how many current residents decide to leave at the end of the Fall semester. Students must have their student identification numbers (SF State ID) in order to apply for housing. ID numbers are given out after student has applied to the University.

Apply on the SF State Housing Portal by clicking “continue to application” below. The date we receive your $40 application fee is your APPLICATION date.

Step 2: License Agreement

The License Agreement portion of the Portal is available immediately following the payment of the $40 nonrefundable application fee. Students will begin to make Housing preferences, sign the Terms & Conditions, and make the initial payment. If you choose to cancel your License Agreement, your $800 initial payment is refundable.

License Agreements are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, completing the License Agreement pages and making the initial payment as soon as possible will increase your probability of receiving a housing space. The date the License Agreement and initial payment are completed is the LICENSE AGREEMENT RECEIVED date.

Step 3: Confirmation

SF State Housing will be confirming applicants for Housing spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority is based on License Agreement Received date AND Application Received date. The earlier all previous steps are finished, the more likely it is to receive a space. Spring housing availability depends on how many current residents decide to leave at the end of the Fall semester.

SF State Housing will begin to send confirmations via email in December 2016.

Wait list

While we do not anticipate having a wait list after classes begin in January, we highly recommend completing everything by November 15 for the best chances of receiving a space early. Students who apply after November 15 may experience a delay in receiving a space.

Wait list notifications are sent twice a week from mid-January through February. If you have not been confirmed by the time the wait list expires, you will be asked to cancel. Your application for Spring 2017 cannot carry over to summer or fall.
